Oh my, what a refreshing dose of long awaited rain we received last night! I got absolutely soaked- not a care in the world, it felt great! 😃
Weather forecasters are suggesting a mild wet winter.
Mild winters continue Hedgehog needs and breeding.
Not all hedgehogs hibernate.
PLEASE continue to provide food and water throughout winter months too. Late summer hoglets are too small to hibernate and so will need straw filled hedgehog houses, food & water, to keep them warm and alive.
Some hedgehogs will continue to mate. Female hedgehogs ovulate in the presence of a male hedgehog, let’s suggest they mated at the end of October. Mum to be will be pregnant for roughly a month, giving birth at the end of Nov, early Dec. There will be no insects or grubs to eat, so how will they survive? The simple answer is that they won’t UNLESS you are still feeding them. They will travel further than normal desperately searching for food to survive.
No food means no mummy milk for the hoglets, which she will need to provide for at least 4-6 weeks. Then she will need to show them where food is and how to forage - but wait, it’s now January, the weather colder and definitely nothing wild to eat! YOUR food and water provisions throughout winter WILL SAVE LIVES!
Please, provide food and water for all wildlife ALL YEAR AROUND.
Climate change is forcing wildlife to attempt to evolve. Many gave birth very early this year, could that be because the heatwaves killed so many the year before?
Wherever you are, watch and listen to wildlife, they tell a story, and a weather forecast, as do many plants.
