The end of September and into October encourages us to tidy our gardens and allotments ready for a winter sleep, but only too often, they are cleared to a catastrophic level resulting in wildlife suffering.
Please make a survival wild pile for wildlife instead of using bins and fires.
Many species' larvae/cocoons are on leaves to overwinter, these are your butterflies etc for next year - don't kill them with fire or tipping.
Leaves, twigs, grasses etc are perfect for wildlife like hedgehogs to live in or use to build their winter nests - this years hoglets are too small to hibernate, but will need a warm nest and support feeding throughout winter.
If you must have a bonfire, please move the debris to the burning position on the day you are going to light it which avoids wildlife moving in over night and burning to death.
Please don’t regret your Bonfire night by killing animals resting inside - hedgehogs often don’t run away from danger but simply curl into a ball.
