Article: Hedgehog Feeding

Nourishing Our
Nocturnal Garden Friends

Hedgehogs are charming little visitors to our gardens, known for their adorable snuffling noises and, of course, their spiky coats. One of the best ways we can help these delightful creatures is by offering safe, nutritious food, especially when natural food sources might be limited. Below, we’ll explore the ins and outs of feeding hedgehogs responsibly, including a special note on one of their all-time favorite delicacies: beetles.

Understanding Hedgehog Diet

  • Insect Eaters at Heart: Hedgehogs primarily eat insects, beetles in particular. Indeed, beetles form a huge part of a hedgehog’s diet, and they’re important pollinators and beneficial bugs in our ecosystems.

  • Protein is Key: Whether from insects, specially formulated hedgehog food, or a high-protein cat/dog kibble, protein should be central.

  • Avoid Milk and Bread: Hedgehogs can’t digest cow’s milk properly, so it can do more harm than good. Bread offers little nutritional value. Instead, always provide fresh water.

When and How to Feed Them

  • Timing: Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so place food out at dusk and remove any leftovers in the morning to keep the feeding area clean and discourage unwelcome pests.

  • Location: An area close to cover, like under a bush or in a hedgehog feeding station.

  • Portion Control: Hedgehogs won’t typically overeat, (a handful of kibbles or a small scoop of hedgehog food) are best. This prevents waste and ensures good hygiene.

  • Water Access: A shallow dish of clean water can be a lifesaver, particularly during warmer or drier months.

About Beetles and Why They Matter

Beetles are a staple food for hedgehogs, but beetle populations are also in decline due to pesticides, habitat loss, and climate change. By planting wildflowers, avoiding harsh chemicals, and maintaining compost piles or leaf litter in corners of the garden, you can encourage beetles (and other beneficial insects) to thrive. More insects in the garden means a healthier buffet for your hungry hedgehogs.
