Your Guide to Saving
a Hedgehog in Distress

Welcome to the Lucky Hedgehog Rescue Blog! We’re here to provide you with insights, tips, and stories about hedgehogs, their care, and how you can make a difference in their survival. Whether you’ve discovered a hedgehog in need or simply want to learn more about these wonderful creatures, this blog is your ultimate resource.

Step 1: Approach with Care

Hedgehogs are wild animals, and sudden movements can stress them. Always wear gloves to protect yourself from their spines and to avoid spreading germs. Gently pick up the hedgehog using a clean towel or cloth and place it in a secure box lined with soft material.

Step 2: Provide Immediate Care

If the hedgehog is cold, lethargic, or appears unwell:

    • If possible, provide a small amount of meaty cat food to keep their energy levels up.

    • Place a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel under one corner of the box to provide gentle warmth.

    • Offer fresh water in a shallow dish – never give milk, as it can harm them.

Step 3: Contact Your Local Rescue Center

Reach out to a local rescue center immediately for expert guidance. At Lucky Hedgehog Rescue CIC, we’re available 24/7 to help.

Call us at 07507 791665, and our team will assist with next steps. Provide as much detail as possible about the hedgehog’s condition and location.

Step 4: Transport the Hedgehog Safely

If your local rescue center advises you to bring the hedgehog in, place it in a secure, ventilated container lined with a soft towel or cloth.

Keep handling and noise to a minimum during the journey, and avoid direct sunlight or drafts. This helps reduce stress and keeps the hedgehog comfortable en route.

Every Action Makes A Difference

Why Hedgehogs Need Us

Hedgehogs are one of Britain’s most beloved wildlife species, yet their population is rapidly declining. Habitat loss, road accidents, and urban hazards threaten their survival. Every rescue contributes to reversing this trend and ensuring a brighter future for these gentle creatures.
